Did you know that you can get more clients and double or triple your sales just by changing your website layout?
Michael Campbell of Internet Marketing Secrets tested 21 website templates to determine which ones produced the highest conversion. His goal was to generate higher revenue from Google AdSense ads on webpages.
After evaluating hundreds of website visitors, Michael was able to determine which areas of the webpage were viewed and clicked the most. And although this study was about AdSense Ads, I found some great strategies that can be applied to websites for coaches and consultants.
Here are my 3 favorite take-aways on how to maximize your sales with website layouts.
1. Header Graphics
Most sites have a graphic in the top header area of a webpage. It’s an important part of the look and feel of a site and it carries your brand. But once someone sees it, their eyes tend to skip over it and ignore it.
Not surprisingly, Michael’s study found that the header at the top of the page was the least looked at area on the webpage. This is why I recommend that you do not put your opt-in box in the upper right corner of your header.
2. Headline and Navigation
The headline and navigation bar were the most read and clicked on areas. These are usually the areas right under the header graphic.
You always want to have the most important client attraction element right under the header graphic. For most coaching websites, this is a great headline and/or video. For a graphic artist, it may be your portfolio.
You also want to keep your navigation bar clean and easy to use. I like to use seven items or less on the navigation. If you need more, use a drop down menu or incorporate a secondary navigation menu on the site.
3. Two column website layouts
Two column website templates outperformed the three column templates on almost every test. Why?
When you frame your main content with left and right side columns, people immediately identify that the “good stuff” is in the center column, and they just ignore the side columns, especially if they are cluttered with confusing navigation or small ads.
This is why my Mother Lode Websites™ are designed with one and two column page layouts.

Summary
Many of the findings in Michael’s Ultimate Heatmap study confirmed the strategies that my team and I already use in our Mother Lode Websites™. Even though our coaching websites don’t include AdSense ads, the marketing strategies for getting higher responses and sales conversion still apply.
And it’s why so many of our clients get conversion rates of 20-50%.
